Psychological aspects of pregnancy and the post birth period
"I have worked within the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK for over 40 years in varying positions and capacities, predominantly this was within maternity care as a midwife.
Over the years I have seen many changes and trends emerge some good and some quite negative but I have also noted that maternal mental health is a rising concern in the UK, with perinatal mental health affecting between 10-20% of women during pregnancy and the 1st year after having a baby. Alarmingly it is also one of the leading causes of maternal death in pregnancy and this 1st year period by suicide within the UK.
Addressing this involves working as part of a multidisciplinary team to promote a healthy pregnancy and lifestyle and early identification by looking at causative factors and the impact on the mother, child and family unit.
I want to share my experiences of working with pregnant women over the last 20+ years and link it to the work I do today from conventional as well as holistic approaches. This involves the setting up of an aromatherapy service within a hospital unit and embracing holistic aspects of maternity care and the evidence it has produced. Also the difficulties and adaptations that had to take place to keep it sustainable through to my retirement from service to re-evaluating and moving forward as a volunteer giving back and working from a different viewpoint with pregnant women."
Experiences from Oasis Relaxation Services
"Working within the National Health Service (NHS) for over 40 years has given me many opportunities and life experiences, positive and negative in format.
As part of my journey integrating conventional and complementary care became key to me setting up and leading Oasis Relaxation Services as a volunteer. Initially this service was known as 'The Oasis Project' set up to explore if it could assist patients accessing services at the George Eliot Hospital in Warwickshire, England who were experiencing anxiety and stress when attending the hospital for tests and procedures. This was developed using simplistic holistic techniques and approaches and has evolved to become a multifaceted service that is growing to become an established integrated part of the hospital system. It has also been expanded to include staff members who are experiencing work place stress and anxiety that is compounded by external factors this is part of a collaborative venture to keep the staff 'well to excel' and that patient care does not suffer and that we have staff who are not just seen to be functioning or off absent from work. This also protects them as individuals and also means ensuring a good work-life balance.
I want to share with you how we began and the obstacles to forming the service, also what techniques we offer and where. I also want to share the results of data and success indicators and future indicators to keep us sustainable."
